Repeat Prescriptions

You can request a repeat prescription online or by post. We therefore encourage you to download the NHS APP to order prescriptions online. You may need to request a PIN from reception.

Please note we do not `re-write' an urgent private / hospital prescription to an NHS prescription. You must take this to the pharmacy as usual.

We do not accept telephone requests which sometimes lead to errors.

Routine repeat prescriptions will be issued within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Hospital Prescriptions

Hospital prescriptions should be taken to the hospital pharmacy for dispensing. We will not reissue such prescriptions from the surgery and will only add repeat prescriptions to your file on receipt of a letter from your consultant.

Prescriptions from hospitals should be consistent with the pharmaceutical prescribing policy of NHS Barnet and if they are not they may be converted to a prescription that is consistent. The same applies to private prescriptions.

We will not issue prescriptions that are outside the licensed use - sometimes called on a `named patient basis'. If this is recommended by a consultant / third party they will need to prescribe it and you will be responsible for any costs associated with this. There are also some drugs that are outside our clinical experience that we never prescribe and usually there are special arrangements for obtaining these from hospital.

Prescription Fees

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

  • those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
  • those who are age exempt
  • those with certain medical conditions
  • More information is available at NHS Choices

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

  • Prescription (per item): £9.65
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
  • 3-month PPC: £31.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

  • Telephone advice and order line 0845 850 0030
  • General Public - Buy or Renew a PPC On-line

There is further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website.

Use of Patient Data

Our practice is collaborating with NHSBSA (NHS Business Services Authority) which is providing NHS numbers for those patients that may be suitable for electronic repeat dispending prescriptions. The information is obtained from NHS prescriptions submitted to the NHS BSA. A member of our clinical team will contact these patients soon to explain the benefits of this service.
